Sara and I just spent one week in Palm Springs at the Senior Portrait Artist Convention.  Every year I travel to at least one convention and one smaller seminar to learn and update my photography techniques.  SPA is a whole convention geared toward photographers specializing in senior pictures so I never miss it.  Amazing photographers like Scott Crosby and Rod Evens come from all over the country to teach us cool new developements and shooting styles.  I get so inspired that I can’t wait to start implementing everything I’ve learned. Not only are we in class everyday but they have a shooting section where we can watch and learn from famous photographer.  I’d like to share some on the images that I took during these classes at SPA.

I’m a big believe in continuing education.  Each year I research and find a couple seminars that I’d like to attend along with one big convention.  I think staying up on the latest trends and new techniques is really important to running a successful photography studio.  This year in January, I attended Senior Portrait Convention in California.  This is one of my favorite conventions because it specializes in Senior Photography and is totally cutting edge.  One of the key note speakers at the convention was Travis Gugleman.  He is a very successful senior portrait photographer in Idaho.  You can check him out here  www.gugelmanphotography.com.  I really appreciated his fresh approach to senior portraits and his studio is located relatively close to me so I signed up to attend one of his seminars last week.  I just got back and I’m so excited to start applying all the cool new techniques I learned. We worked from sun up to sun down averaging about 13 hours a day. We even got to photograph a body builder!  I just love to learn…. especially when it’s related to photography or has anything to do with good looking men…Ha.  I also took my sales and marketing girl, Sara and we had a lot of fun driving even though it was about a ten hour trip!  Check out some of the images that I captured at his workshop.

IMAGE SUBMISSION

March 13, 2009

I just found out today that my image submission to the Professional Photographers of America  was accepted.  I’m now happy to say that I’m a Professional Certified Photographer.

Studies show that certification is the most widely recognized consumer credentials and Professional Photographers of America is the leading certifying agent for professional photographers.  Photographers have to pass a comprehensive written exam measuring their technical expertise and also successfully submit their work to a panel of judges for review and approval. Testing sites and image submission are only available 4 times a year.  This year while at Imaging USA I took and passed the written exam.

JANUARY- CONVENTION MONTH

I’m finally back in town!  What an incredible 2 1/2 weeks! My first stop was Las Vegas to the Senior Portrait Artist (SPA) Convention.  I’ve been a member of SPA for two years now and I love this organization.  They’re on the cutting edge of senior imagery and each year I can’t wait to learn all about the new techniques and trends for the upcoming senior season.  This year West Valley student Danielle Ball won an all expense paid trip to the convention after I submitted her senior images to the organization.  Any student that has their senior pictures taken at photonuvo is eligible for the SPA model program.  You can check out their website at www.spamodel.com.  Danielle did an incredible job!  I’ve posted some images of her below on the catwalk and also some images I took of the other models. Also posted are images of Danielle taken by Kirk Voclain, a well know photographer that spoke at the convention.

After SPA, I headed South to attend Professional Photographers of America Convention held in Phoenix, Arizona.  This fabulous organization promotes creative imagery and education for professional photographers.  This was my first year attending and the classes and education that I received were well worth the trip.  I have tons of new ideas and products that I’ll be implementing at my studio.
