Sara and I just spent one week in Palm Springs at the Senior Portrait Artist Convention. Every year I travel to at least one convention and one smaller seminar to learn and update my photography techniques. SPA is a whole convention geared toward photographers specializing in senior pictures so I never miss it. Amazing photographers like Scott Crosby and Rod Evens come from all over the country to teach us cool new developements and shooting styles. I get so inspired that I can’t wait to start implementing everything I’ve learned. Not only are we in class everyday but they have a shooting section where we can watch and learn from famous photographer. I’d like to share some on the images that I took during these classes at SPA.

February 24, 2011Interview with Mcklyn from the Seattle Models Guild
November 14, 2010Being a model scout can be very challenging, but Mcklyn at SMG has a gift for finding talent. Here is his thoughts on his job, what criteria makes a great model and his journey to the job he now loves.
Interview
1. How did you get into the modeling field or what inspired you to become a modeling agent?
I began as a model/actor in Oregon while I was attending school at Southern Oregon University. Eventually I began interning at an agency there and slowly took on more responsibilities as Agency Director. I moved to Seattle last year and am now doing New Faces and Scouting for SMG. I love it here.
2. You’re also a very talented photographer. Did you get into photography through the modeling business or were you a photographer first?
Thank you so much. I’ve only recently begun shooting. It wasn’t until I worked on-site with very talented NY and Miami photographers that I began to develop an interest in photography and developing my creative side. Since then my passion for photography has grown immensely as I always strive to improve upon my craft.
3. What do you look for in people that aspire to become models? What makes one person get chosen over another.
We look for that special spark or charisma that makes a model light up. Height is very much a major factor (5’8-5’11 for females and 6’0-6’3 for males). Models must also be able to fit into designer sample sizes and proportion is important. Great bone structure, unique features, various ethnicities and mixes. Personality, likability and professionalism do go a long way in this field as well.
4. Tell us a little bit about the Seattle Models Guild: how it got started, how long has it been in business, its main focus or field (catalog, high fashion).
Seattle Models Guild was established in 1978 by Joanne Myers. She and her daughters, Kristy and Nicole still run the agency. We represent models based in Seattle, the US and all around the world. Our models work for clients like Nordstrom, Amazon, Eddie Bauer, Target, Abercrombie & Fitch and more. We do a variety of commercial work for department stores, catalogs as well as designer high-fashion clients. We also place many of our models in larger fashion markets like NY, LA, Miami, Paris, Milan and Asia for further development and to expand on the models’ career.
5. If someone is interested in becoming a model for the Guild, what would they need to do first?
If they are interested in modeling, they can go to www.smgmodels.com, click on the link “Become a Model” and submit their photos online.
We also have open calls here at the agency every Monday and Wednesday between 3-4pm.
6. Could you tell us how Caleb and Ana’s modeling career is progressing?
We are very excited have Caleb and Ana since your model search in Ellensburg. It was a fantastic turnout with many beautiful faces. We’ve been diligently promoting the both of them with many of our clients. It is still fairly early on in their careers, so we are hopeful that more work will come along very soon.
Thank you Linda for all of your hard work. You are a very talented photographer and produce beautiful images. It’s great to see that the beautiful faces in Ellensburg are being shot well. We look forward to working with you more in the future as you continue to be our ‘scouting eyes’ in your surrounding areas.
Upcoming winter fashions from London!
October 26, 2010My employee Sara just got back from a ten day stay in London. She just happened to be there during “Fashion Week” so I thought you’d all love to hear the latest news in European Fashion. Here’s what she saw:
Scarves, scarves and more scarves!
Pashminas, cashmere, knitted, and silk scarves!
Wrapped, tied, knotted.
Thrown on or around woman’s necks all over London.
And PS…I saw men with scarves too.
Skinny Jeans and leggings with long sweaters,
belted raincoats and cropped jackets!
Tunics paired with anything!
Boots! knee high boots, short boots, high heels, wedges.
Anything goes in the boot category
It’s official! I’m a Seattle Models Guild Photographer!
October 25, 2010After photographing and submitting a couple test shoots to the Seattle Model Guild, they’ve signed me on as an official SMG photographer in Eastern Washington. This means that when SMG has a model in Eastern Washington that needs some test shots done for their portfolio, they don’t have to drive all the way to Seattle. I’ll mostly be working with models that have already been picked up by the Guild but I’ll also be keeping an eye out for potential talent in my high school seniors clients that I photograph. In fact, as part of my Photonuvo Model Program for next year, every model will get one of their model images submitted to the SMG. How cool it that!
Fashion Shoot with the Seattle Models Guild
October 20, 2010I’m so excited to share some of the images that I took of Ana and Caleb, the two winners chosen during our Fashion Show Event. Mcklyn ,the Seattle Models Guild agent, and his assistant Sarah, greeted many eager faces who waited in line hoping to be the next SMG model. Mcklyn signed on Caleb and Ana with SMG that night and things have moved quite fast for the two. Last I hear they both met with agencies from LA and Milano. Ana was already up for a paid editorial job a week after the fashion show. I’m so happy for both of them. I got to spend the next day after the show photographing them with Mcklyn to get their portfolio started. We photographed the pair in the industrial part of town and then headed for the country. Mcklyn was eager to photograph in open fields because he’s a city dweller so we went out of town about 4 miles to a field by the river. It was a really windy day and it made it hard to hold my off camera soft box, but it really added a cool effect to the images. On the way back to town, Mckyln hopped out of the car at the stoplight under the freeway and we worked there to get the final shots. It was a great day and both kids did an amazing job! Here are some of the images I captured that day.

Fashion Show was a Big Success
October 19, 2010Earlier this school year, we hosted a fashion show along with Flirt and Gaylyn’s Salon. It was a huge success. The models did an amazing job! I’m so proud of them all! Three of our models were CWU football players and they rocked the house. I was lucky enough to have my two sister in town, Carolyn in from Egypt and Judy from Colorado to choreograph the show and help the models find their “walk”. DJ Dominic spun the tunes and the whole show came off seamlessly. The house was packed- standing room only. There was a huge line to see Mcklyn from the Seattle Models Guild and he chose two kids from the audience for a free photo shoot the next day and a modeling contract with SMG. Caleb and Ana were the luck winners and Mcklyn and I spent the next day photographing the pair. Here’s some pics from the catwalk.

Seattle Models Guild coming to Ellensburg
August 20, 2010Model Shoot with Jessica Hanna
August 6, 2010Jessica Hanna, a local Ellensburg girl and owner of Hanna Marchel, www.hannamarchel.com just signed with TCM modeling agency www.tcmmodels.com in Seattle and needed a test shoot for her comp cards. Jessica’s previous modeling experience made her fluid behind my camera and we were able to get some beautiful images of her. I really enjoyed working with Jessica because she was game to try anything and was completely outgoing. We worked in her salon for the first 3 outfits using the available ambient light and a couple daylight balanced halogen lights that Jessica had. I wanted a wind blown look for drama and the regular fan wasn’t strong enough so we brought in the leaf blower and it worked great! We then headed to the local bowling alley and the owner there was nice enough to let us use several lanes and gave us a pair of official bowling shoes. We had to make a run to Fred Myers for the argyle socks, which were a must to complete the outfit! I used my little power pack and drug the shuttle to capture the ambient background light. Jessica came across as very young and playful in these images. We then headed outdoors for that “ All American Girl” look. Jessica was very animated and I was able to capture some great movement and fun. Over all, I’m very pleased with the images and the emotions that I captured. I hope TCM is too.

Photoshoot for Seattle Models Guild
June 3, 2010I just did a photo shoot for the Seattle Models Guild with Maren Peterson. She is not only beautiful but she is an amazing young woman. She is a great student and increadible athlete. (check out her bod) I had the privilege of working with her for several hours last weekend and we had a great time and got some amazing photos. I submitted these photos to the Seattle Models Guild last week. Mia at Flirt did the styling for this shoot and Mango’s was hired for the hair and makeup.
